Honoring a Trailblazer: The Garnet Baltimore Historical Marker Unveiling and Reception

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is proud to announce a special event celebrating the life and legacy of one of RPI alumnus Garnet Douglass Baltimore 1881, a pioneering civil engineer, landscape architect, and the first African American graduate of RPI. A visionary in his field, Baltimore made lasting contributions to the Troy community through his innovative infrastructure projects and the design of some of the city’s most cherished landscapes. In recognition of his achievements, a New York State Historical Marker will be unveiled in his honor.  

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Announces Reid Wiseman as Bicentennial Commencement Speaker and Will Award Its First Posthumous Honorary Degree to Emily Warren Roebling

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) today announced two special honorands for its Bicentennial Commencement celebrations. Astronaut and Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman ’97 will return to RPI as the Bicentennial Commencement Speaker, and Emily Warren Roebling, who led the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge to completion, will receive a posthumous honorary degree, the first to be awarded in the history of RPI.Reid Wiseman ’97

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Welcomes Tom Capek ’86 to Board of Trustees

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has announced the addition of Thomas G. Capek ’86, senior vice president and chief engineer at Corning Incorporated, to Rensselaer’s Board of Trustees. Corning is one of the world's leading innovators in materials science and has a longstanding relationship with RPI supporting research, philanthropy, and student recruitment. Capek previously served on the Dean’s Leadership Council in RPI’s School of Engineering. As a Board of Trustees member, Capek sits on the Academic Affairs and Research Committee and the Student Life Committee.

Improving Food Access

Food access is one of the largest social problems in the United States. The challenge of accessing healthy foods is especially pronounced in communities of disadvantaged populations. Research led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) proposes to develop a local food cooperation (LFC) program that integrates a state-level food hub network to enable the coordination of multiple regional food hubs, and regional farm to institution programs that address regional food insecurity and inequity.

Order of the Engineer Inducts New Members

The Order of the Engineer inducted over 170 new members on November 17, 2022.   These new members are seniors from every department in the School of Engineering, including 36 from Civil and Environmental Engineering.  The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession. Each new member received a ring to remind them to make ethical decisions throughout their engineering careers and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying them as an engineer.
